Lesson transcript:

Left Hand Technique: The Pull Off

Now we're going to learn another left hand technique: the pull off.

What is a Pull Off?

  • It is in the opposite direction of a slide.
  • It goes from a higher fret, for instance, the third fret.
  • You actually pluck the string with your left hand.

How to Execute a Pull Off

  • Start with your middle finger on the third fret.
  • Pull off to your index finger on the second fret.
  • You can also do this to an open string, and that works as well.

Introducing the Tag Roll

Next, we're going to learn a different roll used as a tag. A tag is something you put on the end of a song.

Reversing Roll Technique

  • This has a reversing roll that goes from forward to backward without a fifth string in between.
  • In our other reverse roll, there was a fifth string before the roll turned around.
  • This one goes forward and backward without the fifth string in between.

Practice the Roll

The roll goes like this:

  • You can practice playing this roll just leading right into itself.
  • Tag licks are often like that because they start and end on the same note.

This is a little something to learn, and we use that in songs.
