Drum Kit Designer and Drum Machine Designer in Logic Pro
Staying with the theme of drums, I'm going to load up Drum Kit Designer. This tool is essentially the backend of the drummer functionality.
Overview of Drum Kit Designer
- Not just a drum synth: Drum Kit Designer is akin to a drum synth, but it is not in the electronic sense we were previously discussing.
- Physical representation: It represents a drum kit positioned in a room on a rug.
- Customizable Elements:
- You can click on any of the drum elements to change them within the specific kit you're working with.
- For example, I am currently using the SoCal kit, but I can load other kits, like the Motown Revisited kit.
Sound Manipulations
With Drum Kit Designer, you can:
- Change kick sounds: Adjust the kick for your preferred sound.
- Tune sounds: You can tune them up or down.
- Dampen sounds: Reduce sustain for the notes.
- Adjust gain: Change the volume for:
- Kick
- Snare
- Toms
- Hi-hat (though you can't change the hi-hat itself, you can modify aspects of it)
- Cymbals and crashes
Drum Machine Designer
One of the most powerful drum synths available in Logic is the Drum Machine Designer.
Features
- Pad-focused design: It allows you to work with different pads, functioning like a sampler specifically tailored for drums.
- Loading Kits:
- I'll load a kit using my library.
- For instance, let's select some electronic pop sounds.
Keyboard Layout
- Every note is laid out chromatically on the keyboard.
- Each note triggers a corresponding sound, where:
- C1 triggers the kick
- D1 triggers the snare
- C#1 triggers the rim shot, and so forth.
Changing Samples
- By clicking on the kick pad, you can see several options available. If the Library is open, you can change the original sample in your sound bank.
- For example, switching samples changes the sound easily, but I prefer to stick with the electronic pop setting for continuity.
Sound Editing Options
You can modify sounds with:
- Pitch adjustment
- Knock effect
- High cut filter
- Sub enhancement
- Sustain and release controls
- Distortion control - be careful not to overdo it!
- FX addition: You can integrate reverb or delay.
Sample Swapping
You can swap out any sample in your library, including those not included with Logic. For example, clicking on Stomp shows other samples within that category.
Pad and Kit Controls
- 16 pads interface: Typically, you are presented with a view of 16 pads.
- Extra slots: Clicking on the little arrow allows you to see additional available slots.
- Sampler options: You can delve deeper into the main and detail sections of the cue sampler for each sample.
- Overall controls: Kit controls provide a range of effects (EQ, compression, overdrive) that apply to the entire kit, while pad controls allow for per-pad adjustments.
Conclusion
This interface is remarkably user-friendly, particularly for electronic producers who will appreciate the vast array of sounds and styles available. You can have hours of creative fun with the Drum Machine Designer!
