Hip Hop Chord Transitions: G Major and C Major
We're on to the final example of part one of hip hop, and we're going to work on moving between the open chords we've learned.
Chord Positions
- G Major: Use your third finger.
- C Major: Use your first finger.
It is really important to play this with a finger per fret. This approach will make switching between the two chords much smoother, rather than trying to use one finger and making big jumps.
Practice Sequence
We're starting off with:
- A whole note of G: 2, 3, 4
- A whole note of C: 2, 3, 4
Then we'll go between the two:
- G, C, G, C, and finishing on G.
Suggested Practice
- Practice without the backing track for now.
- Aim to get this as smoothly as possible at a steady speed.
If I were you, I'd practice at this kind of speed at home, really focusing on:
- Building the muscle memory for how hard we have to push.
- Moving as smoothly as possible between the two shapes.
It might take some time to get smooth, but stick with it, and we'll get up to speed with the track in no time!
