Example Two: New Technique
In this lesson, we'll explore a technique that involves leaving our finger on a fret on a different string than the one we're currently playing.
Understanding the Technique
- Bar Two:
- We're using the open E string and the third fret on the B string (the D note).
- We'll be alternating between the two notes.
Key Points:
-
Finger Position:
- Keep your finger on the D string while slightly lifting it to stop the sound, but there's no need to completely release your hand from the fretboard.
-
Playing Sequence:
- Play the E, then the D.
- Lift up slightly to stop the D note, then play the E again, followed by the D.
-
Pressure Control:
- Focus on the pressure of lifting your finger up and pushing it back down.
- This technique helps improve speed.
Important Tips:
-
Clarity:
- If you don't lift your finger, the notes will blur together and sound muddy.
- It's essential to lift your finger so the E string rings out clearly underneath.
-
Finger Positioning:
- Be sure to use your fingertip. If you're pressing down too low, you'll block the E string, which will inhibit clarity.
Breakdown of the Rest of Bar Two
-
Half Notes:
- Start with the open E string.
- Then move into the passage we discussed.
-
Finishing with:
- The first fret on the B string (C),
- The third fret on the B string (D),
- A high E to conclude.
Challenge:
- This part is designed to help you practice being precise with your fingertip placement.
Practice Exercise
-
Let's give it a try. Count out loud as you play:
"One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four."
Additional Advice
- Patience: This may take some time to master.
- Practice: Focus on getting both strings to ring out clearly and finish the notes by pulling off the fretboard.
- Tempo: Take as long as you need and slow it down if necessary.
As you practice, remember that this technique will come up repeatedly as you progress with your guitar skills!
