Lesson transcript:

G7 Run Ideas for Piano

You could do a nice little run, for example, on the G7, kind of going down, essentially, kind of going down a G6 chord.

Approach

That's just one sort of way of doing it, I guess, just doing the same thing.

Hand Positions

  • That hand position: those four notes going to that hand position
  • Then that position to that position, to that hand position

You could also do it on the C.

Contextual Practice

Put that in context.

  • You could do it a little slower like that.
  • Or you could do it with that kind of more triplet fill.

You could practice it on the different chords. Use it when you feel like using it. For example, on the D7.

More Right-Hand Ideas

There are a couple more ideas for the right hand. There are a lot of those kinds of ideas, such as:

  • Sliding up and then rolling down again
  • The very James Booker idea of going via the major seven down to the dominant seventh

I'm doing that quite a lot as well.

Riff Ideas

Here's a kind of simpler thing:

  • This nice little riff, which we looked at on both the boogie course and the shuffle course, is based on the sort of old Pinetop Smith riff, which is a very useful, very useful riff based on the ninth chord.

Left-Hand Techniques

There's a nice little idea for the left hand, actually. Rather than using octaves:

  • Why not use tenths?
  • Rather than using the F, use this ? which is something that James Booker uses a lot, actually.

It's almost like an F7 in inversion in tenths, but he's sharpening the fifth and using that as the basis of the inversion.

Enhanced Resolution

  • Sharp five
  • Resolving to the one, which just adds a bit of flavour to it, you know.

About the instructor

Paddy Milner
Paddy Milner
