Understanding Sight Reading for Guitarists
Okay, guys, so I just want to quickly talk to you about sight reading and how useful this can be to you as a guitarist and as a musician.
The Importance of Sight Reading
- Sight reading can be a controversial subject among popular guitarists.
- Guitarists are often not renowned for being the best readers compared to other musicians.
- However, it is a really useful skill. It has come in handy for me ever since I made it a focus to improve my sight reading.
Breaking Down the Skill
Although it can seem like quite an overwhelming topic, we can really break it down into nice, easy, digestible steps.
Resources to Help You
I've prepared a PDF for you to download that walks you through the basics of how to approach sight reading.
Practical Applications
If you are doing the Rotschool syllabus, sight reading may be a necessary part of your exam. If you opt out of the improvisation section, you'll be doing sight reading instead.
Benefits of Learning to Read Music
- Reading music allows you to learn pieces directly from the paper instead of just by ear from backing tracks.
- It also aids in transcribing your own solos, as you can write them out if you understand the process of sight reading.
Career Considerations
Looking ahead into potential careers as a musician:
- If you want to work in theatres or pits, sight reading is an essential skill.
- Most gigs will present you with charts, and you'll benefit greatly from having the ability to read.
Having basic reading skills can really help you go a long way.
So please do download that PDF and check it out!
