What I'd like to show you is a return to that funk example we looked at earlier concerning rhythmic comping.

Let's explore some simple ideas that you can incorporate around the things we're already doing to create more movement using single note phrases.

For instance, something like this: 1, 2, 3, 4.

So, just as a first thought, we're still on our A minor and D minor seven chord changes here.

Rather than sticking to what we had before, which is a really cool-sounding funk part, we could create a melodic phrase that works with both of those chords, which is what I've done.

A Minor Pentatonic Scale

I'll use the A minor pentatonic scale to play this little phrase in the middle, and I've thrown that in. It complements both chords equally.

This is a simple example of how you can take a rhythmic part and inject lead and fill work in there.

As I said before, when you're soloing, starting with a more rhythmic-based idea can make it less of a shock to transition into a blazing solo.

• Use rhythmic and chord ideas as part of your solo to establish it and maybe make your way up the fretboard.

Then, you can start introducing the lead lines and some of the more flashy licks later on. It's a really cool thing to be able to do.

You can hear examples of this in all your favorite players' performances. When you listen closely, what you might perceive as rhythm parts, either in a verse or a chorus, usually involve elements of lead improvisation as well.

• If we go back to classic rock, artists like Jimi Hendrix often have a heavy lead line influence while comping during their verses and intros.

Think of musicians like Prince; in his solos, you'll often notice a heavy rhythmic element combines with incredible lead guitar work.

So, it's worth listening closely to your favorite artists to hone in on the guitar parts. Listening with headphones can help you really hear what's going on.
