In this second part of his two-course series, things get adventurous: Ron takes the outside-note ideas from Part 1 into real solos, showing you how to make harmonic moves on the fly without tipping over into jazz.

You'll fold diminished 7th and major 7th arpeggios into your lines, reach for altered and half-tone/whole-tone scales over a minor blues, and thicken your comping with quartal harmony, 9th chords and sliding 9th-to-6th moves. It wraps up with a blues-flavoured take on Santana's Black Magic Woman that puts the whole vocabulary to work.

Ron Sayer

Ron Sayer is a guitarist's guitarist on the UK blues circuit and a mentor to players including Oli Brown and Sol Philcox. He has been nominated four times at the British Blues Awards - for the album 'Better Side', the single 'Don't Make Me Stay', and his co-writing on Oli Brown's 'Here I Am' - and has won Guitarist of the Year. In his courses he breaks down the phrasing, tone and feel behind electric blues lead playing.
