Lesson transcript:
Hi, welcome to Music Gurus. This is a drum lesson on "Yeah," which is a Rock School Grade 1 piece from the new syllabus.
When I look at a chart for any piece of music, here are some important things to consider:
Time Signature:
Track Description:
In 2005, this track won an award for the best dance video at MTV. As a drummer playing for dancers, it's crucial to maintain rhythmic precision.
At Grade 1, we highlight the importance of rhythmic accuracy because, unlike drummers from the 50s and 60s who played by feel, modern drummers often play along with backing tracks and click tracks.
Tip: You are most likely to fluctuate when moving between section A and section B.
Instead of the usual pattern, the bass drum anticipates the second eighth note of the second beat:
1, 2 and 3 and 4, and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4.This anticipation gives the music its swing.
Try recording yourself for 10 minutes without a metronome, then listen to the recording to see if you maintain the same tempo.
When transitioning to Section B (bar 9), we introduce a crash cymbal.
In Section B, the hi-hat opens:
Key Coordination:
In the penultimate bar:
Give those rests the same attention as the notes, ensuring you don't come in early on the fourth beat.
So, those are my wise words about "Yeah" by Usher. Good luck, have fun, and enjoy the track!
