Lesson transcript
Music Lesson Jam Session
Introduction
Well, let's get a couple of people up! Who fancies having a jam? Fantastic! Anyone?
Encouragement for Students
While we're getting ready, I want to address anyone who might be sitting there, thinking they'd like to get up but feeling a little intimidated.
I was recently talking to one of you on the Internet about this course, and I can't remember who it was, but I can relate to that feeling.
When I started out playing guitar, I was much later to the scene than my friends. I began playing music at about 15 years old and was hanging out with musicians who had been playing for much longer.
We used to go to jam sessions, and I never got up because I felt like they were all so far ahead of me that I wouldn't play anything of value.
I still wish to this day that I had just gotten up and tried it. There were so many missed opportunities to improve because I felt intimidated at the time.
So if you're sitting there feeling like that, I understand how you feel. Please do get up! It's a very friendly atmosphere here, and no one is judging you.
Call to Action
So don't let that hold you back, please.
And it's true, you definitely learn by actually doing it.
The Jam Session Begins
Are you up a little? Sorry, are you sure?
Yeah, sounds nice. Fantastic!
Introducing the Musicians
Wow, fantastic! What's your name?
So we've got Druvith on the hypophone, which is a first. We've got Duncan on the guitar, and what's your name, sir?
Oh, shout out to Fred! I'm Fred on the drums.
Let's initially play it as if we're on a gig. Then we can talk about what happened in the tune and things.
Musical Instructions
So, do you want to take a couple of verses? I've got the hypophone, so it's up to you, man. Do you want to sing this one?
No? It's fine. I'm hearing this, man. Fantastic!
Final Rehearsal Instructions
This is a worthwhile experience. Don't be nervous.
I'll count it in and we're going for a quick change from F to B flat.
Here we go:

Paddy Milner is recognised as one of the leading blues piano players in the world - he is currently keyboard player of choice for Sir Tom Jones, following several years with the late, great Jack Bruce - but he is also a superb original songwriter and a distinctive singer. Just read the praise from the likes of Dave Brubeck below! His playing was featured on the soundtrack for the hit 2019 film 'Rocketman'.
He has twice won the award for Best Keyboard Player in the British Blues Awards, and he holds a long-standing residency as a founder member of the Ronnie Scott's Blues Explosion at the world-renowned Ronnie Scott's club.
His current group LONDONOLA plays homegrown British music with a strong dose of New Orleans spirit, and his collaborative group JAWBONE goes from strength to strength following the release of their self-titled debut album.
- "I love it... there's a guy who can really play the piano" - Dave Brubeck
- "I highly recommend it. Somehow things start to feel much better!" - Jack Bruce
- "The best blues piano player in Europe..." - Blues Access, USA
- "Impressive & original" - The Times
- "Dazzling" - The Independent
Across his courses, Paddy breaks down authentic blues shuffle, slow blues, boogie-woogie, rock 'n' roll and New Orleans piano - right down to three classic boogie-woogie songs - so you can learn these styles from one of the very best in the business.
