Lesson transcript:
The Evolving Role of Artists and Their Managers
Of course, over recent years, artists have become much more entrepreneurial and much more multimedia in their approach.
The Changing Landscape
Many more artists, for example:
- Create their own videos
- Have their own TV production companies
- Operate their own labels
This shift brings into question the extent to which a manager should be obliged to run that area of their business for them.
A New Partnership
In the modern artistic world, it's only reasonable to treat your manager as your business partner. However, this partnership can be quite short-term, often lasting only for the duration of the management term. Therefore, it's essential to:
- Allow them to commission on everything
- Recognize that this is a hotly contested point in the industry
