Music Lesson - B Section

Okay, so you've got the A section. Now let's move on to the B section. This section has a slightly different melody and is slightly more complicated, but I love it. I love the B section of this tune!

Transition from A to B Section

As we come out of the A section, the second time you play it, the melody changes ever so slightly.

• Remember, we do this thing and then we repeat in the A section.
• But the second time that happens, the melody changes.

So, have a look at this in the second time bar on the sheet music. It goes like this:

"Okay, so ever so slightly different."

I'll play that and slow it down:

• The second time we play that line: G E, D, B down to the G.

Actually, it's quite nice sometimes to have lyrics for this. So it goes:

"I got a really groovy pad. I better really do a lot of living jumping."

You've got a bit of a jump there, we're actually jumping a tenth. Here's how it looks:

• Three, two, thumb down, then up to jumping.

Complicated Section

In my opinion, this is probably the most complicated part of the whole tune that we need to get.

So just at speed, I'll play it so you can hear how it sounds.

Once we're up there, let's take it from that jumping:

• Try to get to the end of the A section in your own time.

Now, let's speed it down:

• D, E, G, E, D, B, G, B, B.

Starting the B Section

The B section starts up there jumping and goes like this:

Okay, so we'll slow it right down:

• Little finger on B, thumb down to D.
• Second finger on E, third finger on G.

So, we have:

• B, B down to D, E, G.

These are the notes.

We'll worry about the fingers a bit later.

• Starts on B, D, E, G, B, D, C, B flat.

Because we're in G, this becomes:

• A sharp, B natural, D, E, G, and then B twice.

Tips for Fingering

At speed, see if you can get that into your fingers:

• I do this: Third finger on B, then thumb down to D.
• It involves a bit of a jump.

Here's the breakdown of the fingering:

• Third little finger on B
• Thumb on D
• Second finger on E
• Third finger on G
• Then, if you can, jump to third finger up to B.

This puts your hand in the right place for the next phrase:

• Jumping, little finger on D, fourth finger on C, third finger on A sharp, then down to B natural.

And back to D, E, G, then jumping again with your little finger on B flat.

Special Note

Now, just a quick side note, while I was showing you the B flat, I actually broke my little finger playing football, and it doesn't bend properly. Not the best for a piano player!

But anyway, here we go!

• So it's jumping, nice and slow:

"B down to D, E, G, B, D, C, A sharp down to D, E, G back to B."

Final Lines and Practice

These are all the notes at speed. The melody is jumping. Again, try to get that into your fingers.

I always find it helps to sing along as well. We do that phrase a few times, and then the last line is just slightly different.

Last Line

I'll play you the last line:

• It goes D, E, G, B.

So:

• Thumb on D
• Second finger on E
• Third finger on G
• Little finger on B.

The start of the melody is the same.

Putting It All Together

All the way through, I'll play the right hand of the B section from where it turns into your second time bar on the sheet music.

It goes like this:

[Play the right hand notes here]

Slow that down and play it as many times as you need. It's a little bit trickier than the A section, but get that in your fingers, and then we'll look at the left hand.
