Overview

So now let's put both sections together. We know the A section, we know the B section.

Form of the Song

Don't forget the form of this song is A, A, B, A:

  • A section twice
  • B section once
  • Finish with an A section at the end

Right Hand Practice

Now, let's split it up once again.

  • You do the right hand.
  • I'll play the left hand along with you.

Get the right hand down, then we'll switch.

You ready?

  • Start on the E on the one.
  • So, one, a, two, a.
  • One, two, three, four.
  • One: E, D, C, G, F, E.

Okay, you ready?

  • One, two, a.
  • One, two, three, four, one.

B Section

Okay, we're going to the B section now.

  • Okay, great.
  • Now let's do it again.
  • I will play the right hand; you take the left hand.
  • Eventually, we'll put them together.

So, I'll take the right hand. You're on left hand duties.

Count:

  • 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1.

Chords

  • F6 chord now.

Okay, great. Now I'll put the two hands together.

  • Together.
  • And you can slow this down.
  • Hopefully, it'll sound something like this: F7.

Ending the Song

Now, of course, we need a way to finish.

There are many different endings that we could use.

Classic Ending

Let's say we've gone:

da, bada, bada, bada. Don't get around much anymore.
Let's go with this classic big band and swing ending:

  • Don't get around much anymore.
  • Then we're going to move both hands up the piano.

Okay, so we're going to go:

  • Don't get around much anymore.

This is the ending that we're going to do.

Finger Placement

  • Third finger on the E up here (left hand).
  • Second finger on E.
  • Little finger on C.

So you've got E, E, and C.

Sequence:

  • Move every single note up from E (with your second finger) chromatically: to F, F#, and then G.

Left Hand

And that's it! Then your left hand is going to go all the way down the piano and just hit a C.

Simple as that!

Performance Tempo

At tempo, it sounds like this:

  • Don't get around much anymore.

Once again, that would be:

  • E and C,
  • F and C,
  • F# and C,
  • G and C.

Then a C right down at the bottom just to finish.

Showmanship

For a bit of showmanship, when I'm doing that with the band and we hit that last note, I always do this.

You need to get that! Are you ready?

  • So we go: ba ba da, ba da ba da.

And that's it! We've ended the song.

About the instructor

Tom Seals
Tom Seals
