Passons aux touches noires

2:30
Essaie maintenant la même chose avec les touches noires, qui offrent un univers sonore différent à explorer. Pour information, l'univers sonore qu'évoquent les touches noires s'appelle le mode pentatonique, une gamme de cinq notes.

Using Black Keys for Exploration

So we're also going to try this technique using the black keys, which create a very different sound world, just as exciting as the sound world we've just experimented with here.

Hand Position

With the black keys, you can create pretty much the same hand position as before. Just use the neighboring black notes to the white keys that your hands were previously on:

  • Left Hand: Get your hand position sorted and hover above the neighboring black keys to the white keys you were just using.

    • Focus on the five black keys below middle C.
  • Right Hand:

    • Focus on the five black keys above middle C.

Technique

I'm going to use exactly the same technique, but this time, just for variety.

"You can use absolutely any notes on the piano for this. I'm just suggesting these particular hand positions, especially if you are coming at this for the first time."

Pulse Creation

  • Left Hand: Use your thumb (finger one) to create the pulse.
  • Right Hand: Develop a melody organically and in random order that fits with this pulse.

This establishes a pulse and phrase at the foundation, but it offers a very different sound world.

Reversing the Roles

Of course, these roles could be reversed:

  • Right Hand: Use your fifth finger to create the pulse.
  • Left Hand: Develop the melody.

Important Notes

  • Remember, it doesn't matter how long you maintain that pulse, especially if you're coming at this for the first time.
  • Take your time!

"We've already skipped what would otherwise be loads and loads of half-hour piano lessons by simply cutting straight to hand position, hands together, and making wonderful music, without having to worry about learning things hand separately or notation."

So, it really doesn't matter if you take just a little bit longer getting a pulse going with that one hand before you start.
