Lesson transcript:

Shebeg and Chamor: A Celtic Baroque Piece

Composer: O. Caroline
Period: 18th Century
Album: Wooden Horses

Overview

In this lesson, I'd like to share my interpretation of "Shebeg and Chamor," a beautiful Celtic baroque piece. While I covered this piece on my dad's Gad DVD, my approach today will have some slight differences.

Playing Techniques

  • Tuning: I'm in Dagad.
  • Technique: I start off with a brush tremolo using my index finger to brush the strings with up and down strokes.

Melody Interpretation

  • Opening Section:

    • I transition into the melody, primarily playing on the second string.
    • This section is played freely.
  • Transition:

    • The piece then moves into a more timed section, where I incorporate ornamentation.
    • For example, on the A chord, I add some embellishments.
  • B Section:

    • In the second section, I begin the melody on the third string.
    • You'll notice instead of playing straight across the strings, I gracefully move down to a B flat.

Musical Feel

  • The melody is straightforward and sweet, but the essence lies in how you feel it.
  • For instance, the second time around the tune in the B section, I tend to swing it slightly instead of playing it strictly as a waltz.
  • I also like to add ornamentation during this part.

Personalization

Feel free to interpret the piece in your own way, you don't have to follow my version precisely. Enjoy exploring your unique expression of this lovely melody!
