Music Lesson: Scarred for Life

Hey, how's it going? I'm James, and today we're looking at a grade two piece called Scarred for Life.

Overview of the Piece

This tune is a Scar tune, hence the name of the title. It's really upbeat with lots of strong, nice melodies.

  • Characteristics
    • Offbeats on the piano and guitar
    • Mixture of reggae music
    • Popularized by The Specials in London among American musicians

There are loads of great bands to check out, with The Specials in Britain being particularly notable.

Chord Progression

This piece features offbeats primarily in the left hand, based around four chords:

  • D minor
  • B flat
  • A
  • (Later on)
  • G

That's essentially the entire piece, except for a small section in the C section where we play offbeat with both hands.

Playing Technique

The idea is to really get into that pocket with Scar music:

  • Offbeat Feel: When you're playing on the offbeat, ensure you're hitting it with a nice bounce.
  • Performance Style:
    • If you're a guitar player, you'll be drumming up and down with your hands.
    • On the piano, we can only play once, so aim for a light, breezy, and playful touch, avoid digging in.

Practice Tips

If you're having a hard time with the offbeats:

  1. Tap Rhythms: Try tapping rhythms with both hands.

    • Play 1 and 2 with your left hand.
    • Right hand can play on the offbeat:
      • "Jat, Jat, Jat, jat, 1, 2, 3, 4, chat, chat, chat."
  2. Offbeat Familiarization: Get it inside your head off the piano, and once you're comfortable, try it on the piano.

You can even use the same chord to practice the rhythm.

Listening for Inspiration

The best way to understand Scar is to listen to Scar music. Most tracks in this genre have these types of effects. So, open your ears and immerse yourself in it!

Challenging Sections

The tricky part comes at the end of the C section, where you transition from offbeats to a new chord, E7.

  • E7 Chord:
    • E, G sharp, B, D (with D played an octave lower).

The same happens with the A7 chord:

  • A7 Chord:
    • A, C sharp, E, G (with G taken down an octave).

Melody and Fingering

  • Play the melody nice and smoothly.
  • Keep the left hand with staccato rhythms while ensuring the right hand flows smoothly.

Fingering Tips

  • For chords C and F:
    • Use 1, 3, 5 in the right hand and 1, 2, 5 in the left hand.
  • Before bar 23, change your fingering to 2 and 4 for the last chord to prepare for 1 and 3 on the downbeat of bar 23.

Importance of Fingering

The right fingering is crucial for making the piece flow easily. Without it, changes can be difficult.

Recap

  1. Scar Music: Focus on offbeats.
  2. Practice: Use slow tempos to build confidence.
  3. Tied Sections: These allow a seamless, rolled effect while playing offbeats in your right hand.
  4. C Section Fingering: Pay attention to fingering before moving to E7 and accentuate the A's at the end.
  5. Melody: Keep it smooth, and don't hesitate to practice sections separately before combining them.

See you next time!
