Guitar Noir Lesson
Tuning:
Guitar Noir is in CG DGad tuning (DADGAD with the bottom two strings down a whole step).
It's in C minor, a nice, dark, very noir key with this tuning.
Chord Breakdown
- C minor
- F
- F sharp minor (adding a 9)
- G augmented 7 chord (with a sharp 9)
- G sharp
- Interesting cluster of an F13 (actually over an A)
- D minor 7, flat 5 (which is the two chord in C minor)
Sequence and Soloing
- Moving from AB7 to a G7 is pretty much the shape of the tune.
- It's not a complicated tune; it's just a head, really.
- Let me play it through from the top one more time.
When I'm soloing:
- I'm really playing over that chord sequence.
- For example, if I'm on the C minor, I often move a little higher and build around these chord shapes.
Example Chord Shapes
- F sharp
- F minor (add the third string open for an F minor 9)
- G (augmented with a sharp 9)
- C minor shape up higher
- Walking chromatically down the baseline creates a familiar sound.
- Always back to that D minor 7, flat 5.
Ending the Tune
At the very end, it does some repeats on the coda.
I play around with that F13 in measure 20, doing it differently each time.
Here's how I'm playing:
- Picking the E, but then playing harmonics on the bottom string and the top three.
- The E flat on the fourth string is picked, but everything else is a harmonic.
And that's Guitar Noir!
