Exploring Pentatonic Scales in Still Dreaming
In addition to utilizing quartal patterns, quartal arpeggios, and major ninth arpeggios in Still Dreaming, you can also incorporate pentatonic scales.
Basic Pentatonic Scale
The most obvious pentatonic scale is the one based on the root. For instance, for E flat and F, the formula is:
- Root
- 2
- 3
- 5
- 6
For B flat, this formula creates a nice open sound by omitting a couple of notes from the scale:
- Missing Notes: No fourth and no seventh.
Using Major Ninth Chords
With major ninth chords, there's another great alternative. You can play the major pentatonic on the 5th.
Example:
- For B flat major, utilize the F major pentatonic.
Notice how this approach does not include the B flat note, which can be provided by the left hand or in the bass. This technique offers a different color and flavor to your major seventh chord.
