Music Lesson: Software Instruments

Aside from all of the drum synths that we have available and all of the synths we looked at previously, we have a couple of categories that we're still to examine:

  • The Keyboard Category
  • Studio Horns and Strings

Let's take a look at those.

Vintage B3 Organ

First up in the keyboard category, we have the vintage B3 organ. This models a B3 organ and, interestingly, it's not based on samples, it's a synth. The sounds themselves are synthesized.

Characteristics:

  • The B3 organ is the most famous organ used in various styles, which is reflected in some of the presets:

    • You can get spooky sounds or more straightforward tones, depending on what you're looking for.
  • Leslie Speaker Emulation:

    • One wonderful feature of this emulation is how it emulates the Leslie speaker, allowing you to change how it rotates.
    • For example, when the speaker is rotating slowly, pressing the sustain pedal changes it to fast, creating delightful modulation during a chord.

Vintage Clav

Next, we have the vintage Clav.

Overview:

  • The Clav is a very famous keyboard used extensively in the 70s on funk records.
  • It has a distinct funky sound, with a variety of presets available to match different styles.

Features:

  • You have classic styles, harpsy tones (which sound more like a harpsichord), and even sitar tones.
  • You can adjust:
    • Brilliance: Increases brightness.
    • Decay: Make it sound snappier or dampened.
    • Pickups: Allows you to experiment with different sound effects.

You can also work with various effects in the effects section, such as:

  • Compressors
  • Distortion
  • Wah (transforming the sound to a "wah" effect)

Classic Logic Plugins

Moving on, we dive into one of the most classic Logic plugins: Electric Pianos. This models electric pianos like the Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer.

Features:

  • Familiar sounds appearing in countless recordings.
  • You can navigate through presets or select specific models:
    • Stage Piano: Softer, more pillowy sound.
    • Classic Wurlitzer Sounds: Rich and vibrant.

Interface Elements:

  • Simple controls for:
    • Bass Boost
    • Volume
    • EQ: Bass and Treble settings.
    • Effects: Includes Drive, Chorus, Phaser, and Tremolo, particularly well-known effects with these instruments.

You can even delve into more details, adjusting:

  • The number of voices to model the sound closer to your preferences.
  • Tweak the preset to create the desired sound.

Vintage Mellotron

Lastly, we have the vintage Mellotron.

Overview:

  • The Mellotron was featured in many iconic recordings, including the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever."
  • This keyboard triggered a tape loop, producing unique sounds ranging from flutes to choirs.

Features:

  • You can blend between two different sounds (e.g., a flute and boys choir), adjusting the mix as you please.
  • Alter the:
    • Tape Speed: Experience the difference in sound quality by adjusting the speed.
    • Tone: Bright or dark settings.
    • Overall Volume: Simple yet effective adjustments.

The interface is also based on synthesis, allowing for numerous sound manipulations and creativity.

This concludes our exploration of software instruments in the keyboard category. Each instrument brings its own unique flair to your music!
