Practicing Phrase Structure in Singing
The best way to practice this is to sing along. This will help you to develop:
- Phrase structure
- Phrase melodic line
Importance of Breath Control
If you run out of breath:
- You're not moving.
- You're not flowing enough.
Identifying Phrases
You can also see where phrases begin and end. For example, in the phrase:
"Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of Stephen."
You would then breathe.
Breathing Techniques
Funnily enough, at the end of bar four, on the word "Stephen," is a full stop.
That's when you'd breathe.
By doing this, you're continuously developing a sense of where the melodic line is beginning and ending.
