Adding Grit to the Last Note
One other bit of grit we can add to this to get down and dirty is the very last note. Instead of just striking it as a note on its own, we could maybe do a rise up to it or a drop, a fall away from the note.
Let me demonstrate that now.
Demonstration
I'll just play the last phrase, the last bar: 1, 2, 3.
There I went up to the note.
Half Valve Technique
How did I do that? Well, I used the valves, just like we did in the bends, where we were lazy with the valves. I used what's called half valve technique.
- If you press your valves halfway down, the holes which connect up with the slides are not fully open.
- So, it changes the sound like this. It gives it a kind of squash sound.
And if we blow through that, we might find that it's hard work. We have to blow more air through it.
Creating the Slide
But if you blow through that whilst you're speeding the air up to going up to that F at the end, then we can get what's called a slide, a slide going up. It's like a glissando.
That's the slow version. Learn to do it slowly first, and then we can try doing it quickly.

He has performed and recorded across a huge range of styles with artists including Quincy Jones, Robbie Williams, Eric Clapton, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Michael Buble, Oasis, Michel Legrand, Tony Bennett, Shirley Bassey and Danny Elfman, among many others.
As Principal Trumpet in London's West End, Mike has performed in Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, The Producers, Billy Elliot, Guys and Dolls, Saturday Night Fever, My Fair Lady and Spamalot, amongst others. He has played on movie soundtracks including the James Bond films, Harry Potter with the London Symphony Orchestra, the award-winning Chicago, Kevin Spacey's Beyond the Sea, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Madagascar and The Corpse Bride. He is featured on trumpet and cornet in George Fenton's Mrs Henderson Presents, and on trumpet in Looking for Eric.
Mike is principal trumpet with the Grammy-nominated John Wilson Orchestra and has been featured in their celebrated BBC Promenade concerts and recordings.
Mike is sought after as a teacher and clinician, and is a professor of trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music. In April 2013 he was proud to be awarded the prestigious Derek Watkins' Chair of Trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
