Lesson transcript:
Enjoying the Journey: Tone Production
So that's it for now. Enjoy these experiments with tone!
The Key to High Performance
Enjoying what you're doing is the key to all high performance in just about anything. This is especially true when it comes to tone production. Enjoying playing the instrument is more important than any amount of knowledge or practice.
Daily Practice and Exploration
Recommendation:
- Play the exercises for just a few minutes each day.
Simply enjoy:
- The different tonal possibilities
- The sensations of the string
- The hair in the string
- The wood of the bow
- Your fingers contacting the bow
Connect all these sensations with the sound.
Sound and Sensation
Remember, the sound of a note and the sensation of playing it are like the front and back of the same coin.
Discovering New Possibilities
After the smallest amount of work using these methods:
- Isolate speed of bow
- Pressure
- Distance from the bridge
You'll quickly find an extraordinary new range of color and expression, as well as infinitely greater control of the bow in all of your music-making.
Mastering the Exercises
If you go further and really become an expert in playing the exercises:
- You'll be able to pick up the instrument and play any of them easily
- Produce a completely pure, resonant tone, free of any blemishes caused by imbalances of speed, pressure, or sound point.
Achieving this level means you'll find yourself on an entirely different level as an instrumentalist and musician.
