Editing in Arrangement View

In this module, we're going to be looking at editing in Arrangement View and how we can use it to start building out a composition.

Session View vs. Arrangement View

There are some differences between Session View and Arrangement View:

• Advantages of Session View:

  • Click to record
  • Easy playback loop sections
  • Great for creating ideas on the fly
  • More live feel with jamming sessions

• Advantages of Arrangement View:

  • More linear approach to music
  • Better for epic swell modulation and storytelling from beginning to end
  • Focused on creating a structured composition

Navigating Arrangement View

Let's explore how to navigate Arrangement View to build an idea, a track, or a composition.

Playing Your Track

Here we have a track, and I'm just going to play it. You'll notice that when I play it, it starts from the very beginning and continues linearly.

• The texture will drop out as it changes, continuing through the track.

Zooming In and Out

To navigate effectively, zooming in and out is essential.

• Using the Time Ruler:
  • Click and drag up to zoom out.
  • Click and drag down to zoom in.
  • Move left and right to navigate.

This movement may take some getting used to, but it's a handy way to understand your set.

Follow Function

When zoomed in, you might lose track of your current playback position.

• Using the Follow Function:
  • Go to Options > Follow to keep the current position centered.
  • Use the follow button to toggle this feature.

This allows you to monitor your waveforms effectively as they progress.

Arrangement Overview

Another way to zoom is by using the Arrangement Overview.

• Click to zoom in and out.
• This overview visually represents what's happening in your arrangement.
• The colors of the clips help identify blocks of sound.

Adjusting Track View

You can also change how you view your tracks:

• Shrink or Expand Tracks:
  • Adjust the size to fit more tracks or make them larger for easier editing.

Mixer and Returns in Arrangement View

Similar to Session View, Arrangement View has options for mixers and returns:

• Extend and shrink your returns and mixers as needed.
• Volume controls differ from Session View; instead of faders, you have buttons.

Playing from Different Positions

To play your track:

• Press the space bar to start from the beginning.
• Press it again to stop.
• Press again to play from the start.

Sometimes, you may want to play from a specific position:

• Select a Clip: Press the space bar to start playback from that point.
• Scrub Area: Use the speaker symbol in the time ruler to click for playback at any selected point.

Global Quantization

Keep in mind that if playback blinks, it's syncing with your global quantization settings.

• Set it to None or Bar to ensure it lands on the beat.

By understanding these features and how to navigate Arrangement View, you'll be able to create and edit compositions effectively!
