Understanding the Four Basic Audio Effects

Now let's look at the four basic types of effects that we have. These are essential elements you'll see repeatedly in production and editing:

  • Compression
  • EQ (Equalization)
  • Reverb
  • Delay

Compression

What is Compression?
Compression controls dynamic range. It helps you get more volume out of your sound. Think of it as squishing the sound together so that there's less range in it. Now, you can make it louder or softer.

Quick Example:

  • Turn down the threshold.
  • Turn up the gain.

Now, you have a much louder sound than before. Notice how the hi-hats become a lot more pronounced when the compressor is on; everything just seems a little louder. That's the primary function of your compressor.

EQ (Equalization)

Basic Types of EQ in Ableton Live:

  • EQ8
  • EQ3

Using EQ8:
You have eight different parameters that can be turned on and off. You can simply come in here and move them:

  • Boost or cut frequency sections
  • Adjust the gain amount and Q (sharpness or smoothness of the gain).

This is crucial in mixing to ensure your sounds fit together well.

Using EQ3:

  • It consists of just three bands: low, medium, and high.
  • It functions like a DJ mixer with simple knobs for adjusting low, medium, and high frequencies.

Practical Example:

  • Turning down the low band reduces the kick or bass.
  • Adjusting the high band can isolate different aspects of the sound.

Reverb

What is Reverb?
When you add reverb, it changes the spatial feel of the sound, emulating a room or space where the sound might be located.

Adjustments You Can Make:

  • Change wet/dry
  • Adjust decay time (which adjusts the size of the room)

By experimenting with different reverb settings, such as those provided in presets, you can achieve various textures in your music.

Delay

Understanding Delay:
In Ableton, there are a few different types of delay, including:

  • Filter Delay
  • Grain Delay
  • Ping Pong Delay
  • Simpler

Using Delay:

  • It creates a repeating sound after the original hit, much like an echo.
  • Adjust the delay time and dry/wet settings (e.g., around 50%).

Feedback Control:

  • High feedback increases the echo effect as it builds upon itself, creating more dimension and space in your sound.

Ping Pong Delay:

  • Similar to regular delay, but with EQ control, allowing you to delay the highs or lows separately.

Summary of the Four Basic Effects

Here are the four basic effects you should be familiar with:

  1. Compression: Changes the dynamic range or volume of your sounds.
  2. EQ: Affects various frequencies of sound.
  3. Reverb: Creates a sense of space as if the sound is reverberating in a room.
  4. Delay: Emulates an echo or repeat of sound with a slight time delay.

In summary, these effects, compression, EQ, reverb, and delay, are essential tools for creating and experimenting with music.

About the instructor

Isaac Cotec
Isaac Cotec
