Meet Your Instructors

Harry Pope

Hey, I'm Harry Pope. I'm excited to take you through the jazz and hip hop pathways on Rock School Grades debut to eight. I've been chosen to do this because, as a pro drummer living in London, I play both jazz and hip hop to a really high professional level.

I've toured the world playing these genres, and it sounds really cool! Check out my new album with World Service Project, titled Serve, coming out in April.

What You'll Learn

In this course with me, you're going to learn about the idiosyncratic parts of:

• Jazz
• Hip hop
• Funk music

For example:

• Ghost notes
• Dynamics
• Mobility around the kit
• Technique (both hands and feet)

Most importantly, you'll gain the insights that make you sound authentic within these genres, whether it's jazz, hip hop, or funk, which is also really exciting!

Rich Hawking

Hi everyone, I'm Rich Hawking. I'm going to be taking you through the metal songs of the Rock School syllabus. I'm mainly known for my playing in the metal world with the band Hacktivist.

My Experience

I'll be drawing upon my experiences from:

• Touring
• Playing festivals
• Performing in big arenas

I'll share my experiences and tips to help you digest these parts and get you playing authentic-sounding metal.

Youssef

Hello everybody, my name's Youssef. I'm a pro drummer living in London, and today I have some classic rock tunes to show you.

Influences

This music is what I grew up listening to, heavily influenced by classic rock legends like:

• Jimi Hendrix
• Led Zeppelin
  • Drummers: Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham, Bill Bruford

What You'll Learn

We'll discuss:

• Applying rudiments to the kit
• Orchestrating them in various ways
• Developing solos
• Odd time signatures
  • How to internalize them
  • Practicing with and without a metronome
  • Counting out loud and internalizing different rhythms

We'll cover different techniques, such as:

• Developing speed for double stroke rolls and single stroke rolls
• Moving them around the kit

Our Focus

The primary focus will be on serving the music, maintaining the groove, and not speeding up.
