Vocal Health and Performance Tips

When we talk about vocal health, there are several important factors to consider:

Environmental Factors

  • Weather: Changes in weather can affect your voice.
  • Room Environment: Pay attention to the comfort of the space where you perform.
  • Travel Conditions: Consider how you travel to a venue.

For instance, if you're traveling in a car with the air conditioning on, it may not always be the best choice. I always turn the air conditioning off because it makes my throat very cold. This can lead to that dry, tickly cough, which is the air conditioning irritating the vocal cords.

Sleep Position and Quality

I prefer to sleep with my window open to get fresh air in and not have my room too hot. This has a positive effect on my voice.

Tips for Sleeping:

  • Sleep Position: When I know I have a big day of singing ahead, I sit up in bed. This helps keep my larynx from folding back and maintains the position of the muscles in my throat. Sitting up keeps my voice working better.
  • Comfort: If I'm not singing a lot, then sleeping comfortably is crucial.

Pavarotti once said, "The best thing for the voice is sleep."

Diet Guidelines

Importance of Nutrition:

What you eat and drink can significantly impact vocal health.

  • Indulgence: While it's okay to indulge every now and then, be mindful if you have performances coming up.
  • Avoid Certain Foods and Drinks:
    • Spicy foods
    • Alcohol
    • Caffeine (coffee, tea)

These can irritate your throat and dry out your voice. Alcohol, in particular, can dry your voice out significantly.

Exercise and Breath Control

  • Physical Activity: It's important to keep your body active. Whether it's swimming, going to the gym, or simply going for a walk, making your body work helps your voice.

Breathing is Key:

Breathing well is fundamental to singing. If you're exercising your body to breathe properly, you'll not only sing better but feel better overall.

Environment Awareness

Be mindful of your surroundings:

  • Avoid Rain: Don't stand out in the rain for too long.
  • Controlled Conditions: Minimize time spent in air-conditioned spaces.

While I can adapt to these environments as a professional, it's best to take care.

Enjoy Your Singing Journey

Remember to enjoy being a singer. Celebrate your successes, and don't forget to indulge responsibly after a performance!

Hydration is Essential:

  • Drink Plenty of Fluids: Water is vital.
  • Tea Recommendations: I enjoy drinking lots of tea, especially with fresh lemon, ginger, and honey.
  • Throat Coat Tea: This soothing licorice-based tea is excellent for the voice.

Keep fluids handy on stage during performances. A little flask of warm tea works wonders!

Instrument Care

Just as brass players oil their instruments, so must we care for our voices.

  • Hydration: Ensure your throat is well-hydrated for optimal performance.
  • Vocal Care: Your voice is a part of you and should be treated with respect.

You can't store your voice and pull it out later. It's always there, part of your emotions and expressions.

Conclusion: Treat Your Voice with Respect

Be mindful of your habits:

  • Avoid Smoking: Vaping and smoking can harm your vocal cords and lead to serious issues like nodules or polyps.
  • Cherish Your Voice: You only have one voice. Once lost, it can be difficult to regain.

While it's okay to enjoy a meal or a drink occasionally, prioritize your vocal health and treat your voice with the care it deserves.

Alfie Boe
