Music Lesson: Composing "May Bell"
Introduction
Today, I'll be sharing a tune I wrote in honor of a lady I used to work with named Maybelle Carter. She sang "You Are My Flower" and played a distinct lick on the guitar that inspired me to create my own piece called "May Bell."
Chord Progression
Here's the chord progression we'll be working with:
- E augmented
- A seventh
- F
- D (with an F sharp in the bass)

Structure
- Main Theme: Repeat the above progression.
- Bridge: "All mistakes are intentional."
- Final Section: Repeat the lick.
Last Eight
- The last eight measures feature a different melody. In the second bridge, I modify the progression slightly.
Banjo Roll
- The banjo roll can be played backwards, returning to the last eight measures.
Wildwood Flower
- Maybelle always played "Wildwood Flower" with a brushing style. After that, I'll be playing something original of mine or from another artist.
