Lesson transcript:
Barry White's Classic Break: "I'm Gonna Love You A Little Bit More"
So that was the break from Barry White's famous I'm Gonna Love You A Little Bit More. It's been widely used in a lot of hip hop tunes and funk songs, and it's an absolutely classic break.
Learning the Break
It's a very good one to learn how to play. Here's what we will do:
- Slow it Down: I'll slow it right down so you can check out what goes on.
- Listen and Repeat: Try and repeat it yourselves.
- Specific Notes: If there are any specific little bits worthy of note, I'll stop and point them out.
Key Elements to Note
-
Basic Groove:
- The hi-hat remains constant.
- There's a double kick at the end of the bar:
- Kick on the last 4e and 4 of the bar.
- Kick again on the one.
This is the basic pattern. Each kick that's on the beat has a little pushed kick just before it.
-
Ghost Note:
- There's a little ghost note in the second bar of the phrase just before the final snare.
-
Notable Fill:
- One more thing worth pointing out is the fill right at the very beginning. Many people have sampled just that fill on its own as an intro to a tune.
- It's a really nice one - all it is is:
- Left, right, left on the snare.
- High tom on the rook with the right.
- Then that kick just before the one of the bar.
This kick is a feature of the whole beat, contributing to the double kick feel.
Final Playthrough
I'll play the whole thing one more time and loop it a few times.
And that's basically it: Barry White, I'm Gonna Love You A Little Bit More.
