Music Lesson: Exploring Cacheville

Hey there, everyone! Hope you've enjoyed learning Cacheville. It's a really nice piece.

The Country Vibe

As you begin your journey with the piano, there are some unique features about this piece of music that are really useful to know. We're diving into a country music vibe with this piece.

  • When you listen to the track, you'll instantly hear:
    • The beat
    • The drum beat playing
    • The steel pedal guitar

There's definitely a sense of, "Are we in Nashville? Are we enjoying some country music here?"

Playing Along

When you play along, try to get into the spirit of that. It will help you gain confidence and feel like you're part of the band.

Analyzing the Music

Looking more closely at the music, it seems clear to me that:

  • We have a mix of chords in both hands.
  • The melody is in the right hand with chords underneath in the left hand.

Chord Clarity

First and foremost, we want to:

  • Get those chords nice and even.
  • Ensure the voicings are clear.

We want a nice ringing chord sound, at least for the intro. As we get to the A section, we have chords in the left hand.

  • Melody Emphasis: Bring the melody out and play as evenly as possible.
  • Rhythm: Listen to the beat:
    • 1, 2, 3, 4
    • 1, 2, 3, 4

The first beat has a natural accent you want to feel as you play along.

Practice Tips

  • Even Playing: Try and make it as even as possible.
  • Count the Rhythm:
    • Two, three, change.
    • Practice the right hand on its own.
      • 1, 2, 3, 4
      • 1, 2, 3, 4

Pay attention to the rests.

B Section Focus

In the B section:

  • You have the chord first.
  • Then a quaver in the melody:
    • 2, 3, 4
  • Practice the left hand on its own.

The Importance of Rhythm

Try to think about the rhythm as you're playing. Remember to:

  • Count the two beats.
  • Count the crotchets.
  • Count the quavers.

Getting a sense of rhythm is very important for this type of music.

Getting Comfortable with Rhythm

As you progress from debut through the grades, you'll encounter a drum beat in virtually all the songs you play.

Get used to:

  • Feeling the kick drum
  • Hearing the snare
  • Listening to the hi-hats

Understanding the Drum Beat

  • The kick drum normally comes on the first beat.
  • You'll hear that kick, which is the big bass drum that keeps the fundamentals of the rhythm.

The B Section: The Heart of the Music

Technically, looking at the piece, the B section really holds the meat and potatoes of the music with this nice melody. You want to ensure that it really sings out.

  • Finger Technique: I'm doing thumb, thumb, 2, 3, 4 for what my fingers are doing.
  • Chords: Get them nicely voiced underneath.
  • Feel free to use some pedal if you want to.

Returning to the Intro

Then we're back to the start again. Finally, it finishes off simply, just like the beginning, with nice chords from D major, two chords in each hand (D to C).

  • Sudden Finish: We want a nice sudden finish with a staccato mark over the note, to keep the fun vibe of the country music.

Conclusion

Hope you have a great time learning this piece! Wishing you all the best with your learning as you go through debut and venture into new pieces. I really hope you enjoy learning the piano!
