Lesson transcript:

Welcome Back!

In this section, we're going to look at the writing process of the song and what to do after the writing session with the artist or writer. When you're sitting there trying to work out your ideas, I've found there are three really important things to keep in mind:

1. Take Your Time

  • Make sure your ideas are thought out.
  • Avoid just throwing things together.

2. See Your Ideas Through to the End

  • I usually spend about half a day on each version.
  • In total, we spent about three weeks on this whole song to achieve the finished product.
  • This approach allows for well-thought-out ideas that might be used in the final version.
  • It helps you discover those little parts that, when ready to be used, are there at your disposal.

3. Don't Be Afraid of Discarding Versions

  • You might not get it right the first time every time.
  • However, because you've adhered to the first two points, taking your time and seeing your ideas through, you may find some gems in the discarded versions that help define the record.

Now, we're going to walk through one of the versions that didn't make the final cut. We'll explore why some parts didn't make it, why we didn't end up using them, and which ideas did end up making the final cut and became important parts of the whole record in the end.
