Improvising Over the Blues

So now we've figured out the form for the blues: the 12 bars, using the three chords: F, B flat, and C.

Starting to Improvise

The Blues Scale

A great way to start improvising is to use the blues scale.

  • The blues scale works perfectly when played over the blues.
  • You may recognize the sound of this scale, as a lot of pop music, jazz, rock, and other great sounds are based within it.

The blues scale in F is as follows:

  • F, A flat, B flat, B natural, C, E flat, and F.

Utilizing the Scale

When improvising, it's important to avoid simply going up and down the scale, as that can sound more like a scale exercise. Instead, focus on:

  • Playing the scale in interesting ways.
  • Using different rhythmic patterns.
  • Imagining yourself singing while you play.

The blues originates from vocal traditions, so when you're playing, aim to feel it deeply within you.

Expressing Yourself

Improvising is about showing yourself to the world.

  • Develop your understanding of theory, like the blues.
  • Utilize this knowledge in practical ways to enhance your performance.

Remember, it's all about feeling and expression!
