Sight Reading Essentials for Pianists

Hey guys, it's James here. I'm going to talk to you briefly about sight reading, which is a part of the Rock School exams and also a very important aspect of being a performing pianist.

The Importance of Sight Reading

  • Context:

    • Pianists in the rock, pop, jazz, and funk worlds often don't have as strong sight reading skills as our classical music counterparts.
    • Despite much of our music being aural-based, developing sight reading skills is crucial if you want to enter music theatre, read big band music, or engage in session work.
  • Rehearsal Benefits:

    • Good sight reading means you can quickly navigate complicated music during rehearsals, allowing for more time playing and enjoying the music.

Learning from Experience

Personally, I came to sight reading late and struggled with it at a young age.

  • Reflecting on My Journey:
    • I wish I had developed these skills much earlier; it would have made my musical journey easier.
  • The Younger You Start, the Better:
    • While it's never too late to improve your sight reading, starting young improves future music enjoyment.

Challenges of Piano Sight Reading

The most difficult aspect of piano sight reading is dealing with two staves.

  • Complexity:
    • Unlike other instruments, pianists have to read two staves simultaneously, recognizing chords and different lines on each.
    • This includes:
      • Contrary motion
      • Counterpoint chords
      • Various elements in the score that can be challenging

Strategies for Successful Sight Reading

Take It Slow

  • Incremental Learning:

    • Start simply and gradually work up to more complicated pieces.
  • Rock School Grades:

    • Each grade presents unique challenges that become progressively harder.

The Cat Trap Formula

I've developed a formula called CAT TRAP that outlines seven key areas to focus on when sight reading a piece of music:

  1. Key:

    • Identify the key signature (e.g., F, C, G Major, G Minor, E Minor).
    • Pay attention to accidentals as they determine the music's tonality.
  2. Articulation:

    • Check for phrasing (staccato, tenuto, slurs).
    • Articulations can be essential for delivering the music effectively, especially in rock or pop pieces.
  3. Tempo:

    • Assess the speed of the piece (e.g., 50 bpm vs 120 bpm).
    • Different tempos can drastically affect how you play.
  4. Time Signature:

    • Understand how many beats are in each bar (e.g., 4/4, 3/4, 5/4).
    • Master the concept of subdivision for accurate rhythm.
  5. Repeats:

    • Look for repeated sections in the score.
    • Remember to adhere to first-time and second-time bars to avoid mistakes.
  6. Accidentals:

    • Identify any sharps or flats not included in the key signature.
    • Missing accidentals can significantly alter the music's sound.
  7. Patterns:

    • Recognize shapes formed by chords and notes rather than reading each note individually.
    • This recognition speeds up sight reading and helps maintain focus on the overall music flow.

Don't Panic

  • Mindset:
    • Everyone starts somewhere, and improving takes time.
    • Start with pieces slightly above your comfort level and build from there.

Final Thoughts

Sight reading is akin to lifting weights; begin with manageable challenges and gradually increase difficulty.

Remember the Key Points:

  • CAT TRAP: Key, Articulation, Tempo, Time Signature, Repeats, Accidentals, Patterns.
  • Don't Panic.

It's a valuable skill that will significantly enhance your career as a musician! Enjoy your practice!
