Okay then, guys, the final point I want to make regarding improvisation, now that we've looked at both melodic aspects and rhythmic aspects, is that they are not two separate entities, okay? These things are very much interchangeable with one another.

Rhythm and Melody Interchangeability

• If you're performing in more of a rhythmic role, there's nothing to say that you can't throw in some fills and lead lines.
• When you're soloing, having a more rhythmic driving section as part of your solo can be really effective.

Funk Example

So, what I'd like to show you is to go back to that funk example we looked at earlier with regards to rhythmic comping. Let me share some simple ideas that you can incorporate around what we've already established to create more movement by using single-note phrases.

Example Phrase:
1, 2, 3, 4... Just something like that.

We're still on our A minor and D minor seven chord changes here. Rather than just sticking to what we had before, which sounds great, we could create a little melodic phrase that works with both chords, which is what I've done.

• Melodic Phrase: I've used the A minor pentatonic scale to play this little phrase in the middle.
• It complements both chords equally.

Incorporating Rhythm in Solos

This is a simple example of where you can take a rhythmic part and inject some lead and fill work. When you're soloing, consider starting a solo with a more rhythmically based idea. This approach helps ease into a more complex solo, rather than jumping straight into a blazing performance.

• Use rhythmic ideas and chord ideas as part of your solo to establish it.
• Gradually make your way up the fretboard before introducing lead lines and flashy licks.

Notable Examples in Modern Music

You can hear examples of this with your favorite players. If you listen closely, what you might perceive as rhythm parts in a verse or chorus usually features some elements of lead improvisation as well.
