Group A: Modes and Jazz Melodic Minor Scale

G Lydian

We're going to begin with Group A looking at the modes and the jazz melodic minor scale.

The first scale is in the key of G, G Lydian. That's this scale here:

C Lydian

Next, let's take a look at the Lydian mode in the key of C, starting on the A string.

B Phrygian

Now, moving on to the Phrygian mode. We've been given B Phrygian in the book, with the root note on the E string, the seventh fret:

Jazz Melodic Minor Scale

Up next we have the jazz melodic minor scale, starting with the root note on the A string in the key of C:

Explanation of the Jazz Melodic Minor Scale

Essentially, the jazz melodic minor scale is half of the natural minor scale and then half of the major scale. So, it's a very unusual sounding scale.

Now, let's have a look at it in the key of A, starting with the root note on the E string, beginning on the A note:
