Rock School Drums: The Pro Perspective

Introduction by Paul Elliott

Hi, I'm Paul Elliott and this is Rock School Drums, the pro perspective on this course.

We've put together an amazing team of top professional drummers and educators,
guys who have toured the world with major artists and who have taught at the highest level.

We'll be giving you:

  • Top practice tips
  • Stylistic advice
  • Guidance through your Rock School grade

Meet Pat Lovett

Hi there, my name is Pat Lovett. I'm going to help you learn the drums on this Rock School course.

I will assist you in learning these rock and blues tunes.
I've got a fair amount of experience myself playing this kind of music with various bands around the world, including:

  • Ronnie Scott's Blues Explosion
  • Tom Jones
  • Zigaboom Odalis from the Meters (a very important band from New Orleans, where the drum kit was invented)

I also had the privilege of learning from Bernard Purdey, who you might know.
Both of these drummers are very, very important in the whole development of rock and blues drumming.
So, they are definitely people to check out if you haven't heard of them.

What I have learned from them, I hope to pass on to you within these lessons.

Jazz and Hip Hop Pathways with Harry Pope

Hey, I'm Harry Pope. I'm going to be taking you through the jazz and hip-hop pathways on Rock School Grades debut to eight, and I'm really, really excited about it!

I've been chosen to do the jazz and hip-hop pathways because, as a professional drummer living in London, I play both genres at a really, really high professional level.
I've toured the world playing jazz and hip-hop, and it sounds really, really cool.

Check out my new album by World Service Project called Serve, which is out in April. I'm excited about the whole thing!

In this course, you're going to learn a lot about:

  • The idiosyncratic parts of jazz, hip-hop, and funk music
  • Ghost notes
  • Dynamics
  • Mobility around the kit
  • Technique for both hands and feet

Most importantly, you will learn those little bits of information that make you sound authentic in your genre of music, whether it's jazz, hip-hop, or the funk stuff, which is also really, really sick.

Metal with Rich Hawking

Hi everyone, I'm Rich Hawking. I'm going to be taking you through the metal songs of this Rock School syllabus.

I'm mainly known for my playing in the metal world with the band Hacktivist. I'm going to draw upon my experiences out on the road, including:

  • Tours
  • Festivals
  • Big arenas

I will share my experience and tips to help you digest these parts and get you playing some authentic-sounding metal!
