Generating an Accompaniment for "All of Me"
To start with, I'll use the tune "All of Me" as an example of how you might generate an accompaniment for any kind of swing style tune standard.
Learning the Melody
- You need to learn the melody, but in fact, it would be quite nice if you got somebody else to play the melody, your friend or your teacher.
- You can focus on accompanying them.
Playing at the Piano
- You'll both be sitting at the piano, but you'll just be playing in the left hand part of the piano.
- To start with, just play the roots. This is the basis of any accompaniment.
Importance of Root Movement
- The most important thing is the root movement.
- I'm going to play through the chords of "All of Me," following the chord chart and just playing the roots of the chord, one note in every bar.
- Unless there are two chords in a bar, when you play two notes.
- Otherwise, just keep it to one note.
- If there are two bars on a chord, you play the root twice at the beginning of both bars.
Octave Consideration
- Notice how I do this in consecutive octaves rather than repeating the same note.
- I'll do this with a metronome at 120.
Noticing the Structure
- Back to the A section, second time bars.
- So that's once through this 32-bar tune.
- Notice the form of this tune is A B A C; it's not A A B A like the other tunes we've done so far.
Conclusion
So, that's a very simple accompaniment. It's important that you do that and that you be able to play that in time with somebody else playing the melody.
- Or, you could try singing it if you wish.
