The Universal Appeal of "Angels"
"Angels" was our first really big hit record. Why was it such a big hit?
A Universal Message
I think it has a message that's very universal. It's not just about personal experiences; it's relatable to people of any age and nationality.
- Lyric Personalization: Yes, there are many "I's" in it, but it describes a situation that resonates with everyone.
- Contrast with Other Lyrics: While many of Rob's lyrics can be very personal, "Angels" strikes a chord that is much more universal.
The Comfort of the Song
Another reason it garnered such popularity is that it's a comforting song.
- Musical Journey: I would describe the music as comfort food.
- It takes you on a journey that is not jarring; instead, it guides you.
Classic Chords
The chords at the beginning are classic.
- Commonality: They're not particularly striking, and there are hundreds of songs that use those chords.

Personal Context While Writing
Both of us were in tricky situations when we wrote this song.
- My Situation: I was a penniless songwriter, unable to pay my mortgage. There were leaks in the roof, and I was contemplating becoming a music teacher.
- Rob's Situation: He had just left Take That and was experiencing a major blowout. He was drinking a lot, taking a lot of drugs, and although he was having a good time, he was also very aware of the pressure of being a pop star.
The Pressure of Success
The only reason pop stars become a big deal is due to hit records.
- Rob's Awareness: He felt the massive pressure to deliver a huge song, almost like he was praying for it.
Hymn-like Quality
I think "Angels" has a quality that resembles a hymn.
- Gospel Influence: If you consider the overall feel and atmosphere of the song, it possesses that sort of gospel or hymn-like quality.
