Classic Rock Phrase Breathing Techniques
Now, we've looked at that classic rock phrase, da da da, and we've got a good flavor of how that should sound.
Analyzing the First Four Bars
Let's look at that whole phrase from the beginning, the first four bars. Here's where we might breathe:
-
Playing the Phrase
I'll play from the beginning, the first four bars. Let's see where I breathe.
Count: 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2. -
Breathing Technique
Well, that time I took a breath in the third bar after the crotchet. After the short crotchet, there's a quaver rest. However, because we're playing a short crotchet there, we've got slightly more time to get a quick breath in. -
Improving Breath Control
If you've got better breath control, you could probably go to the end of that phrase. Let's see if that's possible.
Count: 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3.
Maintaining the Groove
If you develop your breathing, it's quite easy to get to that fourth bar without taking a breath.
-
Keep the Time Going
We don't want to take a breath and come in late on the next note. -
Stay in the Rhythm
Make sure that you're grooving away, listening to the track, and paying attention to the rhythm section. That's really important to keep that steady rock and roll feel.
