Top Tips for Effective Practice
Here are my top tips for effective practice:
-
Practice Often
- Do it for small amounts of time with lots of breaks.
-
Start with Rhythm
- Begin by snapping the rhythm.
-
Identify Pitches
- After snapping the rhythm, identify the pitches.
-
Add the Spices
- Once you've got both components together, you can add the spices:
- Dynamics: How soft or loud to play.
- Articulation: How you approach the notes.
- Once you've got both components together, you can add the spices:
-
Slow Down and Count
- Go really, really slowly and count the music.
-
Break It Down
- Be sure to break the music into small, manageable chunks.
- These can be as short as a couple of notes or a bar.
-
If You Get Stuck
- The best thing to do is to slow down and break it down into even smaller pieces.
- Notice where the problem area is.
- Does it have to do with:
- The rhythm?
- The pitches?
- The tempo?
- Does it have to do with:
-
Isolate and Master
- Once you figure out the issue, isolate that element and master it before coming back in.
The Mental Game
- Often, the mental game is the hardest part.
- If you find yourself frustrated, take a break and do something else.
- Maybe even move on to a different song.
Interactive Tools
For the performance pieces for this course, we have interactive sheet music, which is a great tool in your practice with Music Guru's incredible interactive sheet music.
- You can:
- Choose the performance option to watch me play.
- Select the backing track option to hear only the backing track and play along with the band without me.
- Slow down or speed up the tracks.
- Play with the backing track or without.
- Loop the trickier bars over and over until you master them.
Final Thoughts
- Be kind and patient with yourself, and don't give in to the frustration.
- Good luck with your practicing! Keep it up, and I can't wait to see where it takes you.
