Music Lesson: The Rising and Setting Sun

Overview

In this lesson, we will explore the dynamics of the tune that revolves around the lyrics "The rising sun, rising sun, and the setting sun, Eastern Promise." Our goal is to capture the essence of rising and falling, much like riding on a camel in the desert.

Dynamics

  • Rising and Falling:
    • As we progress through the tune, we aim to make the dynamics dynamically rise and then relax down, going softer.

Starting Notes

  • E for Rising Sun:

    • The first part starts on an E.
    • Lyrics: "Rising sun, rising sun."
  • C for Setting Sun:

    • The second section moves to a C.
    • Lyrics: "Setting sun, Eastern promise."
    • Tip: The end of the word "promise" is like an extra note; prepare to extend this phrase to finish on a C ? our home note.

Playing Instructions

  1. For Trumpet:

    • Start on E.
    • Gradually crescendo, blow a little harder and use more air.
    • As you descend to the D's, relax the air pressure to soften the note.
    • Try it:
      • "Rising sun," starting on E: 1, 2, 3...
  2. End Phrase:

    • Continue into "Eastern Promise."

Introduction Rhythm

  • You can either clap or play the notes for the introduction:
    • Clapping Rhythm: Clap, clap, clap, clap. Hey, hey!
    • If in class, some can clap while others have their instruments ready.

Rhythm Variations

  • Later, the rhythm on different notes appears:
    • C, C, C, C, D, D, D, D, D.
  • Practice that bit starting on C.

Improvisation Section

  • This improvisation section spans 16 bars.
  • Keep in mind:
    • The rise and fall of your camel or sun.
    • Embrace the idea of space in the desert.

Tips for Improvisation

  • Play with space; don't feel the need to fill every second with sound.
  • Inspiration: Think of word phrases related to the song:
    • "The rising sun,"
    • "The setting sun,"
    • "Riding on my camel,"
    • "It's very hot."
  • Feel free to make up any words that inspire you.

Incorporating Instruments

  • The song begins with a darabuka drum.
    • My darabuka produces this sound: [demonstration sound].
  • If you have percussion instruments at school or home, integrate them into your play:
    • Tambourines, shakers, any rhythm instrument.

Final Reminder

  • When improvising:
    • Utilize all five notes: B, C, D, E, and F.
    • Remember to leave some spaces in your playing.

Example Improvisation

  • Here's a short example of improvisation:
    • [Demonstrate keeping spaces between notes.]

By following these guidelines, you'll capture the spirit of the rising and setting sun in your music. Happy playing!
