Lesson transcript:

Bow Control Exercise

This exercise takes great control and, to an extent, forces you to run counter to instinct.

Steps to Follow:

  1. Start at Sound Point One

    • Begin in the middle of the bow.
    • Play with regular, even strokes.
    • Use very little bow and make a mental note of the exact weight you're using.
  2. Transition to Sound Point Two

    • Without altering the weight, keeping it absolutely the same, without lightening or increasing it even a fraction, move the bow to Sound Point Two.
    • Since you've kept the weight the same, the only way to prevent the sound from breaking is to increase the speed of the bow.
  3. Balance Speed, Pressure, and Sound Point

    • Increase the length of the bow so that the balance of speed, pressure, and sound point remains consistent.
    • Continue making every effort not to change the weight in the bow.
  4. Move to Sound Point Three

    • Now, move to Sound Point Three.
    • Increase the bow length even further.

Note: This exercise requires patience and precision. The aim is to maintain the balance of all elements while controlling the sound quality.
