Music Lesson: "Halo" by Beyonc? - A Detailed Perspective

Introduction

Let's check out "Halo" by Beyonc? from a prop perspective. Before playing this piece, I would listen to it to get the right vibe. It's a beautiful power ballad, a pop power ballad in the key of A major and a 4/4 time signature.

Iconic Cadence

Before playing the piece, I would look at the cadence first, which is arguably the most iconic cadence in recent pop history:

  • A major
  • B minor
  • F sharp minor
  • D major

Once these four chords kick in together with a synth, this is the hook of the piece for me. Once you listen to that, you know, "Oh, that's 'Halo' by Beyonc?" and nothing else.

Practice Recommendations

Before practicing this piece, it's probably best to go through the scale alongside some arpeggios to get the right vibe for the sound of this piece.

Piece Structure

  • Chordal intro: 4 bars with the iconic sound of the synths in the backing track.
  • Piano intro: 4 bars. This intro is beautiful as it is written in a classical style, effectively with broken chords.

Practicing Techniques

The best way to practice is with broken rhythms. This approach will ensure that you know exactly what you are doing. You can then speed it up and use another rhythm, giving you the security you need to play those two bars throughout the piece.

Fast Notes in Bar 6

In bar six, we have 30-second notes that are really fast. To play them correctly, you must use strong fingers. I would recommend using the following finger sequence:

  • 2, 4, 3, 2, 1, 3, 2, 2, 4, 3, 2, 1, 3, 2

When you speed it up, you can jump off the first F sharp in bar six, which allows enough time for the key to be released and sound again in bar seven.

Finger Technique

Practice slowly with correct finger placement:

  • 2, 4, 3, 2, 1, 3, 2, 3, 2

It's important to give the key enough time to get down and for the hammer to release the key again. So, the best way to practice is probably slowly.

Structure of the Piece

  • Chordal intro: 4 bars
  • Piano intro: 4 bars
  • Verse one: 8 bars
  • Pre-chorus (or bridge): 4 bars (between bars 17 and 20)
  • Chorus: 8 bars
  • Post-chorus: 4 bars + an added bar for the final A major chord

Chorus Techniques

When looking at the chorus on the right hand, we have repetitive chords. The most important thing here is to avoid stiffening up your wrist.

  • Tip: Keep your wrist flexible to prepare for the next bar.
  • Action: Lift, lift, lift.

Once you press the chord, try to get some air in between the single chords. Always play with a flexible wrist, especially with repetitive chords. This approach will help prevent tension and the risk of tendonitis.

Conclusion

In our grade two arrangement, we finish the song on an A major chord, quite abruptly. This is not the actual end of the song, but in our case, it is.

Summary of Practice

  • Practice the right hand intro and dotted rhythms.
  • Use strong fingers to bring out the 30-second notes.
  • Maintain a flexible wrist in the chorus to avoid fatigue.
  • Always practice slowly with a click to ensure the right hand is super precise.
  • Gradually speed up until you reach 80 bpm.

Always feel free to ask your teachers if you need more help or guidance on finger placement.

Best Wishes

I wish you all the best for your performance! Good luck!
