So, yes, look at this next section, which is kind of contrasting to the previous chorus. The previous chorus had these elements that sound mechanical, like a piston sort of pumping away underneath the engine while the engine is chugging along.

This section, however, features:

• The sound of steam whistling out of the funnel of the engine
• The nice trill of a train whistle

I'm using my fingers here. Sometimes, I play it with a little grace note from the A. I'm not sure if Meade Lux Lewis does that, but there's a little grace note that adds a nice touch.

Technique Tips

• Flexible Hand: Keep that wrist nice and loose.
• Arm Position: Allow your arm and forearm to stay relaxed and loose.
• Chord Construction: We're outlining a C chord here, with a crunchy E flat in there, which is kind of hip.

This combination adds a bit of "nastiness" to the sound before we transition back into the turnaround.

• Change the inversion: Using a different inversion can create a fresh sound.
• Utilize open sixths: This could sound bigger and offer a different idea.

• Turn it into a full triad
• Experiment with other inversions

Feel free to explore and get creative. Even though Meade Lux Lewis incorporates many of the same ideas in his well-known recording of Honky Tonk Train Blues, he also introduces new concepts and expresses familiar ideas in different ways.
