There are two very important aspects to being a good singer:
- Singing in time
- Singing in tune
Target Practice Exercise
This exercise focuses on pitch accuracy, which I like to call target practice.
Visualization Technique
Visualize in your mind's eye:
- A target
- The bullseye
- Finding the center point of each of the notes you're trying to hit
Notes for the Exercise
What are the notes you're trying to hit in this exercise?
They are part of a very basic pattern called the five-note major scale. This consists of the first five notes of the full major scale.
Sound and Rhythm
Here's what it sounds like:
It may seem like I just played that out of time, but I didn't. The rhythm of this exercise is:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
This is what's called a push beat. It's syncopated ahead of the main beat, especially when you reach that last resting note.

Ihre Stimme ist nicht nur in Filmen, auf Alben, in Kreuzfahrtshows und in Tausenden Jingles weltweit zu hören – sie war auch Backgroundsängerin für hochkarätige Künstler wie The Bee Gees, Natalie Cole, Michael McDonald, Bjork, Michael Bolton, Leo Sayer, Rick Astley und Susan Boyle und trat an einigen der ikonischsten Orte Londons auf, etwa in der Royal Albert Hall, in der Downing Street, im Wembley Arena Stadium, in der O2 Arena und im Buckingham Palace. Kim war viele Jahre lang Musical Director großer Unternehmens-Aufnahmesessions in den Londoner Abbey Road Studios und eine der Gesangscoaches für die Audition-Touren von “The Voice UK”. Sie wird regelmäßig eingeladen, Meisterklassen, Workshops und Lehrerfortbildungen zu leiten, und ist zudem eine regelmäßige Referentin bei nationalen & internationalen Stimmkongressen, unter anderem als Hauptrednerin in ihrem Heimatland Australien.
Im akademischen Bereich bekleidete Kim ein Jahrzehnt lang verschiedene Führungspositionen der British Voice Association als Head of Communications, frühere Präsidentin und Direktorin. Sie verfügt über langjährige institutionelle Lehrerfahrung als Principal/Senior Lecturer am Leeds College of Music bzw. am London College of Music und war Head of Vocals bei Vocaltech (heute BIMM London).
Ihre pädagogische Arbeit findet sich in zahlreichen Master- und Doktorarbeiten sowie in Sammelbänden wie “Training Contemporary Commercial Singers” (Compton), “Teaching Singing in the 21st Century” (Springer) und “The Ultimate Guide To Singing” (TC-Helicon).
Kim ist die alleinige Schöpferin der international beliebten Gesangsübungsreihe “Funky ‘n Fun”, die in vielen Institutionen, Privatstudios und von zahlreichen tourenden Künstlern genutzt wird und die Grundlage dieses Kurses “Funky Fundamentals for Pop Singers” bildet (www.funkynfun.com).
