The Steps of Songwriting: A Comprehensive Guide

In this video, we're going to explore the steps of songwriting and the songwriting process. We'll look at how to view it logically, helping us understand which steps to take at what time.

Introduction to the Songwriting Process

Over the years of creating music, I've realized that I approach the songwriting process in a step-by-step manner. This might seem obvious once I explain it, but when I first embraced this approach, it was a revelation. Understanding these stages helped me allocate time effectively for specific tasks. I call this the Stages of Music Production.

Steps in the Songwriting Process

Step 1: Concept

• Generating Ideas: This is where we brainstorm ideas and build a vision of what the music will look and feel like.
• Instrument Choices: Consider the sounds and instruments that will complement your vision.

Step 2: Pre-Production

This stage focuses on gathering the tools you'll need:

• Sample Library: Organize your samples and sounds beforehand.
• Efficiency: Setting this up at the beginning allows for a smoother workflow. You'll spend less time scrambling for sounds while in the creative zone.

Step 3: Sketches

• Initial Ideas: Here, you create basic rhythms and melodies without getting too attached.
• Objective Approach: The key is to make several sketches, allowing you to pick the ideas you like best. This approach enhances my music production speed.

Step 4: Composition

• Development: Take your sketches and start to build them out. This involves turning basic ideas into fuller arrangements.

Additional Stages

• Mixing: Blend the sounds together, ensuring that all instruments sound harmonious.
• Mastering: Finalize the track so it sounds great on multiple systems.

Focus of This Course

In this course, we will focus mainly on the first four stages (Concept, Pre-Production, Sketches, and Composition). Mixing and mastering are distinct skill sets that require a more scientific approach, unlike these four stages, which are inherently creative.

Practical Example: Lotus Weaver

To illustrate these stages, I revisited one of my songs and broke it down into three parts of the process. You will see the progression from the beginning to the end. Breakdown of the Stages:

1. Initial Sketch:

   • Found the first session of "Lotus Weaver".
   • This sketch involved some basic building ideas with drums, bass, and a few synths.
   • It took about 1-2 hours to complete.

2. Working Composition:

   • Transitioned from the sketch to a more developed composition.
   • This stage involved roughly 8 hours over several sessions.
   • More ambient sounds were added, and it began to take shape.

3. Final Track:

   • The finished product certainly reflects the evolution.
   • Added elements like guitar parts contributed significantly to the overall sound.
   • I dedicated around 20-40 hours on this final version.

Conclusion

Through this journey, you will see how I moved from sketches to full compositions. Although I didn't record the pre-production, it includes making drum sounds earlier, which really sped things up.

These four stages will be the focus of our exploration, aiming to navigate them efficiently while maintaining creativity throughout the songwriting process.
