Music Lesson: "There Will Never Be Another You"
So we're going to look at a tune called "There Will Never Be Another You." It's a very cool jazz standard, and tons of people have done it. I'm sort of referencing a Della Reese version.
About Della Reese
- There's a very cool soul belter called Della Reese.
- She did it on a live album from the mid-60s.
- On this album is an organ player named Bill Doggett.
- Very good player.
- It's a very solid band, featuring:
- Ray Brown on bass
- Shelly Mann on drums.
Check that album out! I'm using her vocal as a bit of a reference for the melody and some of the changes they do, which will help us understand the harmony of this piece.
Focus for the Lesson
I'm going to play it in a classic jazz tone, reminiscent of Jimmy Smith, complemented with some left-hand comping. That's the key, I think, to this piece.
- Accompaniment Approach:
- We're not playing a bass line.
- We will augment what's happening in the right hand with some left hand techniques.
- Both hands will be used on the bottom manual to enhance and complement the sound.
I'll put a little intro on top of it. A nice little bit from Jimmy McGriff seems to... seems to say.
