Lesson transcript

Introduction

Hi, I'm Stuart Ryan, a guitarist and composer from the UK. I'm here to guide you through pieces in the blues and rock genres, from debut level up to grade eight.

My Background

  • Experience: I've been playing guitar for nearly 30 years and working professionally as a guitarist for the last 15 years.
  • Roles: In my career, I work as:
    • A studio musician
    • A concert guitarist
    • A composer

Writing Contributions

For over 15 years, I've been writing acoustic guitar columns for:

  • Guitar Techniques
  • Guitarist magazines
  • Acoustic Magazine
  • Acoustic Guitar in Germany
  • Many others across the world

Composition and Education

I also compose music for TV, writing for various programs and music libraries. Additionally, I am an active clinician for the Takamine Guitar Company, where I travel, perform, and conduct clinics.

Currently, I teach at the Bristol Institute of Modern Music (BIM), which is a passion of mine.

Rock School Syllabus

Most importantly, I recorded many of the guitar parts on the original Rock School syllabus years ago. It's a pleasure to revisit these pieces and break down the guitar parts to help you understand how they all work.

What We Will Cover

We'll explore very important stylistic elements, including:

  • Picking and Fretting Hands: Focusing on the techniques for both hands.
  • Improvisation: How to improvise over these pieces.
  • Solos: Approaching the solos effectively.
  • Scales and Techniques: Preparing for each of the exams with the right tools.

So, get your guitar, get tuned up, and let's have some fun with these pieces!
