Exploring Music Genres for Growth

To support your continued development as a musician, it's important to expose yourself to a variety of genres of music.

Recommended Exploration

I'd highly recommend the following:

  • Go to your favorite music platform
  • Explore different styles of music:
    • Genres you naturally gravitate towards
    • Those you haven't had much exposure to

Personal Favorites

My favorite styles of music include:

  • Latin styles: salsa and bachata
  • Punk rock
  • Screamo

Understanding Popular Music

Some other notable styles include:

  • Pop music: This genre is wildly popular and appeals to the masses.
    • Examples include bands and artists like:
      • The Beatles
      • Adele
      • Ed Sheeran

The Heart of Soul Music

Soul music holds a special place in my heart because my dad worked as a radio host for an R&B and classic soul station during my childhood.

  • Roots: This genre has influences from:
    • African American gospel music
    • Blues
    • Jazz
  • Popular soul artists:
    • Aretha Franklin
    • Stevie Wonder

The Vibe of Reggae

Reggae originated in Jamaica during the 1960s, featuring a groovy, danceable beat.

  • Topics often include themes of:
    • Peace
    • Unity
  • Notable reggae artists:
    • Bob Marley
    • Toots and the Maytals

Music in TV and Film

Music plays a crucial role in movies, enhancing the visual experience by adding drama and emotion.

  • Observation Exercise:
    • The next time you watch a movie, pay attention to the music.
    • Notice how it affects the scenes, especially if you watch in silence.

Famous film composers include:

  • Hans Zimmer
  • John Williams

You'll likely remember the music from iconic films like:

  • Harry Potter
  • Star Wars

Developing Your Musical Ear

As you explore music, ask yourself the following questions to refine your listening skills:

  1. Rhythm:

    • What is the rhythm of the music?
    • Can you clap your hands to the beat?
  2. Tempo:

    • Is it slow, fast, or somewhere in between?
  3. Instrumentation:

    • Can you identify the instruments, such as the drum, bass, or maybe a violin?
  4. Mood:

    • What emotions does the piece evoke?
    • How does it make you feel, and what elements contribute to that feeling?

Congratulations!

You're halfway through the course! Not only have you improved your piano skills, but you're also becoming a better musician.
