About this songbook

Start beyond the five-finger position and make the whole keyboard feel like home. This beginner piano book builds technique through short, focused units that turn core skills into music right away - from hand extension, pulse and dotted rhythms to legato, staccato, dexterity, chords, left-hand strength and expressive dynamics.

Across eight units, players explore the keyboard with leapfrog and blind-guess games, shape dotted rhythms for pieces like Hopscotch and Mission impossible, connect long singing phrases in legato repertoire, and bounce crisp staccato with a loose wrist. The book then moves into finger jogging, scale fingering, chord playing in thirds and triads, left-hand spotlight work, and dynamic contrast from pianissimo to fortissimo. Every unit includes practical exercises, a study and two pieces, so technique is always tied to real music.

The repertoire mixes beginner piano classical favourites with folk and world music, including Beethoven, Brahms, Scarlatti, Saint-Saëns, Shaker melody Simple gifts, Chinese songs such as Lantern song and Mo li hua, and the African song Embrukoi. Lang Lang’s introduction makes the book especially motivating for young learners: it is not a page-by-page tutor, so students can jump to the technique they need most and build a personal practice path.

Support materials are available online, and the book clearly flags at least one recorded performance resource for Mo li hua. That makes this a strong fit for learners who want printed music plus extra listening support. Whether you are working with a teacher or practising at home, this Level 1 book gives beginner pianists clear goals, vivid musical images and achievable pieces that sound rewarding early on. Start now. Press play and learn. Find your next focus and keep the piano world opening up.
