Understanding Bar Chords in Guitar Playing

So another thing that I wish I had known is that the bar chords can be very challenging. To this day, I've been touring pretty extensively for like 15 years now. There are some shows where my hand will start to cramp up a little bit over a song that has a lot of bar chords in it.

However, it's a really cool trick if you want to learn a song, such as a Bob Dylan song, or any other artist. If you have their songbook and you know the chords, a great way to play almost every chord is to learn how to bar.

How to Bar

Here's a quick overview:

  • You take your first finger and hold it pretty firm against the fret on the first fret.

• Shapes to Know:

  • Once you know how to bar and have your A minor shape and your E shape, you can play chords like C# minor, even if you initially think you can't.
  • By using your A minor shape up the neck, you can access many chords.

Chord Progressions

For example, with the E shape:

• F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C, C#, D.

Some people can play way up here, but I can't. If you have an electric guitar, you might have better luck reaching those notes.

Chord Progression Tips

Every little step you take with this bar, moving up the neck while using the A minor or E shape, will give you a variety of chords. However, a few points to consider:

• Finger Strength: Your fingers will need to get strong, especially the pointer finger, because you want to hold down that fret when playing bar chords (or power chords, as some people call them).

The Emotional Aspect of Chords

I will add that bar chords have a different energy. For example, consider these two variations of G:

• Open G:
  • This G feels more epic and resonant to me than the bar chord G.
• Bar Chord G:
  • It might sound similar, but the emotional resonance differs.

I can't fully explain this, but I intuitively know which songs call for which chord.

The Pitfalls of Learning Bar Chords

While learning guitar through this barring method is effective, there are a few pitfalls:

   • The open note G is more lovely and resonant than a bar chord G.
2. Understanding Chords:
   • Yes, I provide this trick with bar chords to play along with your favorite song, but learning the open chords (C, A minor, G) will ultimately give you better control over the guitar's sound.
